Will an airport xray machine effect a Digital Cameras memory stick or card in or out of the camera?
No, unlike film, digital media is not affected by X-RAY at all.
The reason why film may be affected by X-RAY, is because it will penetrate the container (which is the whole point of X-RAY) and even though it’s invisible to human eyes, it will expose film, as it’s sensitive to those rays as well.
The digital media stores your pictures electronically as a set of 0′e and 1’s, or physically (in simple words) as some particles inside your memory card holding electric charge and others not. This kind of card doesn’t care about the xray, but do keep it away from strong magnets! Because that’s what it’s vulnerable to. A magnet can alter electrical charges inside your card destroying your pictures.

A note regarding a comment below suggesting to check it to be on the safe side. While it won’t matter for digital media – DO NOT check your film! Always bring it in carry on. There are signs about this all over many airports. Right now all checked baggage in all us airports is being X-Rayed, no exceptions. And the machines that X-Ray the baggage are a lot more powerful than those that are used on your carry-on. In fact, the machines that X-Ray carry-on are said to be safe for film, while ones that do the checked baggage aren’t. The reason is – if an operator spots something suspicious in your carry-on, they’d just ask you to open your bag and show it to them. Alternatively, in checked baggage, they would increase the power of the rays until they see clearly what’s it is. And only in a case when they don’t – they would open the bag and check it in your absence. Yes, they actually do that!.
Advertising Photography: the Reign of the Digital Camera Cometh
Advertising photography in the modern era is essentially the use of digital cameras. Digital cameras include both the DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) as well as the Point-and-Shoot cameras. Now, in Advertising photography, there are many shots that you don’t like and you want to discard them – in film cameras, you can not delete them and you end up using your film for every shot that you take. But in digital cameras, you can delete those photographs you don’t like and save the memory space for more work. You can also upload all the photographs in a computer and delete them from the memory card to make space for further work of advertising photography.
