Are there two types of shutter lag that people refer to?

We all know point and shoot Digital Cameras have shutter lag, but I think some people get confused at the different types of lag.

Lag 1 is when you point a camera, press the button, experience the lag, then the picture takes.

I think it’s best explained on dpreview

http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/Glossary/Camera_System/lag_time_01.htm

Lag 2 is after you take the image, the camera processes it before you can take another one.

Lag 1 is shutter lag
Lag 2 is camera lag (the camera processing the image you just took)

Do people just think every kind of delay is shutter lag, because it’s the nature of compact digital cameras. Oh, and do people seem to think that fast storage cards will eliminate any part of the lag because they’ll be disappointed when they finally try it. Thanks

I think your definition of lag #1 can be futher differentiated:

1A. from moment you depress the shutter button half way to moment camera focuses
1B. from moment you depress the button all the way to the moment the shutter opens

I believe most people when they mention “shutter lag”, they mean your lag #1. At least that’s the way I’ve always perceived it.

Your lag #2 is what I call shot to shot speed.

For large (>8MP) high quality shots and especially taking RAW images, your flash memory card’s speed does matter!

Just think about it, an 8MP photo at high quality is about 4MB. A RAW image of decent size can easily be larger than 20MB in size.

The thing is most flash cards nowadays are pretty fast with over 5 MB/sec write speed (33x), so the card typically no longer becomes the main factor in shot to shot speed.

When I bought a high speed card for my digicam it was because I wanted to make sure while in VGA movie mode @30fps, no frames are dropped.
