Is it possible to make a custom copy stand using parts from a photo enlarger and a digital camera?
We’re trying to photograph large, fragile documents (including posters and centuries-old maps) within a budget. The copy stands we’ve seen are either too small or too costly for us. So it happened to me: could a copy stand of sorts be made with parts from a darkroom photo enlarger? More to the point, has anyone done this?
Can you mount the work on a wall (without putting holes in it obviously) and then use strobes to light it? Place the strobes at 45 degree angles (you’ll need 2) and place the camera at 90 degrees dead center from the work. Fill the frame with the art work. Use a light meter to be sure that the light is even all over the art work – tweak the lights as necessary. You may want to use a polarizing gel on the lights to eliminate glare and/or reflections (especially on framed work.) Be sure the work is flat and the camera sensor plane (indicated by a circle with a line through the center) are exactly parallel. Renting strobes is relatively inexpensive, and this is much easier than building some Rube Goldberg contraption.
