digital SLR first time buyer..advice please?
ok i know your prob getting this same question all the time, was looking into buying my first digital SLR Camera however i don’t want to be spending too much as it wont be overly used i plan on travelling next year so want it for that and maybe a few family pics and sports or something so i don’t want to be investing huge money have been looking on ebay and have seen a few. i know cannon is a great make but obviously i’ll have to fork out more for it but if i am not planning on investing and growing my collection would another cheaper brand do ok? i have seen a olympus E400 has anyone got this or used it before? it comes with 14-42mm lens and 40-150mm lens and a camera bag so that would be me set like?? or a cannon 350/300 D seems to also be around my price but most don’t come with lens…. so what do u think??

I have a 300D, got of eBay before Christmas at slightly inflated prices of £180, with 18-55mm EF-S kit lens, and came with a case. The 18-55mm lens is OK, but you will need another one pretty much straight off. But in all a good camera with plenty of used EF mount lenses on the market.
The E400 looks a capable camera, but I’m concerned about how common lenses are. Canon and Nikon are a lot more popular for SLRs, and in particular there are a lot of Nikon F-mount cameras and lenses out there, with manual lenses out there to be picked up for pennies.
Consider a used D40 or 300D for your price range, and prepare to double your budget the moment you get it for other bits of camera kit.
You want to set aside an extra £50-100 for a Canon EF 50mm f1.8, the MkI will sell for up to £150, the MkII retails at £80ish, but you can get the MkII used if you decide to go with the 300D.
