Flash hot shoe question?
What’s the difference between the hot-shoe on a Panasonic DMC FZ50 and that on say the Nikon D300 or the Olympus E500. I know what the difference between the cameras is. I’m just curious whether I could use the same flashes on all of them.
They all have common features and distinct features.
The common features are:
- The size of a mount – all flashes should physically mount on any of these.
- The basic flash trigger – all the same. That means it should be able to trigger any flash. WARNING: use only low power flashes, there are flash units made for film cameras that will send a few hundred volts into the camera. They’ll burn it right off! But any flash that sends low power to the camera will trigger.
Now distinct features:
Really only one. The TTL and eTTL pinups are proprietary for each of these cameras. Therefore only flash made by same manufacturer or third party made specifically for that camera will work in TTL and eTTL modes.
The rest will work only in manual or Automatic. What this means, the shoe will tell the flash when the shutter has just opened. This is similar to connecting the flash with PC cord.
The rest if for flash to decide. Manual mode is obvious as to what it is. You tell the flash whether to fire and at what intensity. Automatic is a bit more advanced – some flashes can measure the bouncing light themselves, without using TTL facilities. When set to automatic mode, there usually is a table (or maybe electronic calculator) on a flash that will tell you for each ISO and each mode what aperture to set on your camera (shutter does not matter for as long as it’s not faster than camera’s max sync speed, check it in your manual).
I am shooting with automatic flash (Sunpak 383) for many years, and very happy with it. The main advantage of this flash – I can mount it on any camera thta has a hot shoe and go! No proprietary stuff to worry about!

P.S. Again, be very careful what flash you put on. The ones that have high trigger voltage can be fatal for your camera!
