The Strength Of Sony Ericsson Vivaz
Sony Ericsson is once again scaling the heights of the Mt. Olympus of mobile phones with its very first product announcement for 2010 – the Sony Ericsson Vivaz. Anyone who has seen or owned the Satio will recognize right away its aristocratic pedigree. If not for its curved top and bottoms, or sides if held at a landscape orientation, the Vivaz is a Satio in a sleeker mold.
It’s the official name of the rumored Kurara handset making the rounds of the mobile community late last year. It’s now real. It runs the same Symbian S60 5th edition that runs Satio as well as its direct rival, the Samsung Omnia HD and the M8920.
With a more powerful PowerVR processor clocked at 720 MHz, the new Vivaz does everything what the Satio does except its 12 megapixel camera but goes a bit farther with high definition 720p video recording.
Few handset can match this feature. The HTC Bravo/Google Nexus is one rival in the 720p video recording but it only has a 5 megapixel camera with a larger 3.7” AMOLED capacitive display. It seems there’s not one single handset that has a monopoly of the finest features yet.
Top-tier Superlatives At a Glance
The Vivaz brings HD vidcam functionality on the smartphone that only the Samsung Omnia HD had done before. It comes with an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with face and smile detection, geo tagging from it A-GPS and touch focus which allows you to merely touch the part on the display-cum-viewfinder to get focused.
On those features alone, the Vivaz can claim few rivals in the market, being clobbered only by those with 12 megapixel cameras like its own brother Sato and the Samsung M8920. It’s the 720p video recording that makes it a real stand-out in the same league as the HTC Bravo, the Samsung Omnia HD and M8920.
The gorgeous HD video recordings deserve to be seen, not from a TV out which it also has, but from the handset itself. Here, the Vivaz may disappoint as it only has a 3.2-inch wide-VGA (360 x 640) resistive touchscreen display supporting 16 million colors typical in Symbian smartphones. It could have been larger but Sony Ericsson had a higher design priority to make it a sleeker handset.
With a body measurement of 107 x 51.7 x 12.5mm and a weight of 97 gram, the Sony Ericsson Vivaz is the lightest among 3-inch touchscreen handsets. Anything larger than that would exceed these dimensions and weight. There’s the usual gravity accelerometer for auto-rotate but we miss a proximity sensor that would disable the screen sensitivity in a call.
Talk about sensitivity, the Vivaz has one of the best touchscreen responsiveness for a resistive display and doesn’t even require a stylus with its large onscreen haptic alphanumeric and QWERTY displays. Not as good as a tactile QWERTY slider but does an excellent job.
Other than these, the Vivaz is your typical high ender. It’s a 3G smartphone on the dual band UMTS (900/2100) with HSDPA at 10.2 Mbps and HSUPA at 2 Mbps and a quad band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) with GPRS/EDGE on 2.5G data connectivity.
There’s WiFi 802.11b/g with DLNA, Bluetooth 2.1 and microUSB 2,0, A-GPS with Google Maps and WisePilot Navigation systems, stereo FM receivers, 3.5mm headphone jack and TV-out (VGA resolution) ports.
You have social networking guru with java apps for Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Picasa. There’s a 1200 mAh Lithium-polymer battery provides 13 hours of talk time and a standby time of 18 days. For a high end smartphone, there’s really not much else to ask for.
